Christmas for OUR Troops (CFOT) was founded in 2004 when a handful of Midland, Texas residents put together five boxes of goodies to send to a few troops from West Texas who were stationed in Iraq.
Each year after that, as the number of West Texans deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan grew, so did CFOT’s dedication to delivering gifts and Christmas cards. By 2007, word had spread of the good things CFOT was doing. The organization began to receive donations from all over, including states as far removed from Texas as Minnesota.
Last year, CFOT sent 2,556 boxes to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan thanks to the generosity of Americans from all over. Children from Iowa, North Carolina, Kentucky, New Mexico, Florida, and across Texas made thousands of Christmas cards to accompany the generous gifts provided by individuals and companies from across the nation.
CFOT’s founder, when describing how the initiative grew from supporting deployed West Texas troops to those from across the nation, stated: “Growing up I always thought of West Texas as being basically the Permian Basin. When we got involved in trying to support our troops it became obvious West Texans have a huge heart and that West Texas covers a whole lot more country than I ever imagined. When I look at a map it is clear to me that West Texas covers the area from Bangor, Maine to Honolulu, Hawaii and from Anchorage, Alaska to Key West, Florida. The troops that protect our freedom do not ask if we are from Andrews, Monahans, McCamey, Odessa or Midland, they only care that we are Americans.”
On December 7 at noon, volunteers in Midland and Odessa will pack boxes to be shipped to troops in time for Christmas.
